A semester in Spain

September 1, 2011

Senior Spanish and Health and Exercise Science, Sports Medicine Concentration double major, Jennifer Davis recalls her study abroad experience in Valencia, Spain where she attended the University of Valencia Spain.

'A dream come true'

Jennifer Davis was the 2011 recipient of the Denver Council of Foreign Relations study abroad scholarship. Davis reflected on her study abroad experience for the Denver Council on Relations so they could learn about her and her experience. Davis said while meeting with the chair of the scholarship committee Sue Ellen Charlton, “My semester abroad has been the best I've ever had, a dream come true for sure.”

Davis was able to travel to Paris, Portugal, Granada, Sevilla, Morocco and Italy during her time abroad. While planning these trips, Davis made dozens of phone calls to local hostels, which had been a task that would have been extremely difficult for her before. It made her realize, “I was really starting to understand Spanish even on the phone! That was my greatest thrill to see myself improving my language skills every day.”

At one point of her study abroad semester, she was able to tell her host parents that she could finally understand the comments they made to each other. They spoke much faster to each other than they did to her. Davis’s host dad said "Uh-oh, we better watch what we say now, Nora!"

 'Greatest adventure of my life'

Davis reflected to the Council, “I am SO thankful I had the opportunity to study abroad, the experience was so much more than just taking classes in another country. It was about traveling, learning about other cultures, befriending locals, becoming more independent, looking at the U.S. from an outsiders' perspective, developing my language skills…so much more,” said Davis.

Davis added, “Thank you once again for the honor of receiving this scholarship. It was put towards the greatest adventure of my life, and I am forever changed because of it!”

After college, Davis plans to volunteer or work abroad before possibly pursuing further education. She encourages all students to find out more about study abroad and study abroad scholarships by attending the Study Abroad Fair Sept. 16 from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. in the Lory Student Center Ballrooms.
