Charlie Robinson, retired Extension agent and soil science instructor, died Aug. 25

Charlie Robinson (Charles Wiswall Robinson) passed away on August 25, 2009 in Grand Junction Colorado. He was born to Charles H. and Ruth (Wiswall) Robinson on June 6, 1922, and raised in Marlborough, N.H.

Following his high school graduation, he served honorably in the U.S. Army during WWII and became a decorated combat veteran in Europe, including the June 6 invasion of Normandy, France at “Omaha Beach” and the Battle of the Bulge of 1944.

30-plus year career with CSU Extension

Charlie received a Bachelors of Science degree in Soil Chemistry and Science from Utah State University in 1952. After his graduation, he began his 30+ year career with Colorado State University Extension at Appleton and Fruita, Colo.

In 1974, he transferred to the Fort Collins campus, where he taught soil science courses and conducted research on sugar beet nutrition until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of ASA for 26 years and of SSSA for 17 years.

Active volunteer

He was an avid fisherman and golfer and also volunteered much of his time toward youth programs and community services. Charlie always enjoyed sharing a joke or funny story with anyone willing to listen. In addition to his family, his passions in life included good friends and cooking. He made a great salsa and a “mean” pizza!

His parents precede Mr. Robinson in death, his wife, Elayne of 56 years, his older brother Lawrence, and sisters, Margaret and Anna.

He is survived by his family: son, Cleve (Linda) Robinson of Oak Harbor, Wash. his daughters, Susan (Don) McElfresh of Colorado Springs, Colo., Terrie (Ed) VanderTook , and Jan Robinson, both of Grand Junction, Colo., brother, Frank T. (Cherry) Robinson of Marlborough, N.H., nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
