Colorado State indoor track wraps up regular season

February 22, 2009

The Colorado State indoor track squad closed its regular season with a strong showing at the Robert Shine Invitational at the University of Wyoming, highlighted by the Rams' throwers.

Alex Godell, the Rams' senior thrower, was the top collegiate finisher in the men's weight throw with a toss of 20.65 meters. Godell only finished behind former-CSU All-American Drew Loftin, who was competing unattached.

"Alex took his throwing to another level this weekend," said Head Coach Brian Bedard. "He was challenged by the Wyoming guys and he handled it with a throw that would have been the 10th-best throw in the country coming into this weekend."

Shot put

CSU swept the shot put events with Missy Faubus leading all women with a throw of 15.29 meters, and Tyson Johnson won the men's event at 16.18 meters. Jennifer Ugochukwu placed third in the women's shot while Andrew Aragon and Ian Lettow came in third and fourth, respectively, in the men's competition.

In the women's weight toss Serena Johnson paced the Rams with a second-place finish (17.01 meters), while Meagan Berg finished third and Faubus came in fourth.

"I'd like to think that our throwers have had better technique and we are getting better at handling competition," said Bedard. "We are still a young team and we are getting more comfortable, so we are seeing better results."

Jumping events

The Rams were also impressive in the jumping events. Nnamdi Agwu won the men's triple jump (14.36 meters), while Travis Smith followed him in second (13.85 meters). Picking up second-place finishes in jumping events were Ryan Billups (long jump), Meaghan Peak (triple jump) and Tanesha Johnson (long jump), while Olivia Downing earned third in the triple jump.

Also placing in events were Brian Fox (second in the 400 meters), Nigel Joseph (second in the 55-meter hurdles), Doug Dieker (third in the men's pole vault) and Sonni Russell (third in the women's pole vault).

MWC Championships Thursday - Saturday

Up next for the Rams will be the Mountain West Conference championships Thursday through Saturday, hosted by the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
