Gates Foundation education-technology dollars expected this fall

This fall the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and several partners will announce a new project aimed at harnessing technology to help prepare students for college and get them to graduation.

Josh Jarrett, a former software entrepreneur with a Harvard M.B.A., is the senior program officer leading the new project. The Gates Foundation will provide grants to identify and create technology-enabled approaches to improve college readiness and completion, particularly for low-income young adults.

A multiyear, multiwave program, where every six to 12 months a new set of challenges is issued, is planned.

Challenges to tackled this fall will include shared open-core courseware, around

  • learning analytics
  • blended learning
  • deeper forms of learning and engagement using interactive technologies
