CSU names new men's golf coach

August 22, 2012

Christian Newton, one of the nation's top assistant coaches, has been chosen to continue the legacy of success in the CSU men's golf program.

New CSU men's golf coach Christian Newton.Newton, who has spent the past five years as an assistant coach at collegiate golf powerhouse Georgia Tech, replaces Jamie Bermel, who left this summer to become the coach at Kansas. Bermel led the Rams to the NCAA regionals in 12 of the past 13 seasons.

“It’s a dream come true to work at such an amazing institution like Colorado State,” Newton said. “After meeting with (Director of Athletics) Jack Graham, it was apparent that this is the type of atmosphere in which I would like to work. I can’t thank him enough for this incredible opportunity.”

Respected coach

Newton, who in 2011 received the Jan Strickland Award as the nation’s top assistant coach, helped Georgia Tech reach the NCAA Championships and a top-10 ranking each of the past five seasons.

“It has become abundantly clear to me that Colorado State has the potential to compete at the very highest level in collegiate golf,” Graham said. “We have one of the nation’s finest home practice facilities in Harmony Golf Course, and some very talented student-athletes. Adding a coach of Christian Newton’s talent and experience gives me great confidence that we can compete as one of the nation’s top 20 programs. I know coach Newton shares my vision to deliver these results.”

The Rams open the 2012-13 season Sept. 9 at the Miranda Falcon Invitational at the Air Force Academy.
