The Charles and Reta Ralph Opera Center at Colorado State University present a set of one-act American operas for its semi-annual opera scenes workshop.

All performances will be held in the Runyan Rehearsal Hall at the University Center for the Arts located at 1400 Remington Street.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Operas by American composers

The evening features three one-act operas by American composers: The Old Maid and the Thief (1939), The Telephone (1947) both by Gian Carlo Menotti, and A Hand of Bridge (1959) by Samuel Barber with libretto by Menotti.

The Old Maid and the Thief was one of the earliest operas composed specifically for radio and helped further establish Menotti’s career.

The performance is presented by the Charles and Reta Ralph Opera Center and is directed by CSU opera program director, Tiffany Blake.

Opera Center

The Charles and Reta Ralph Opera Center, housed at the state-of-the-art University Center for the Arts, is named in honor of Charles and Reta Ralph in recognition of their generous and continuing support of opera at Colorado State University. The Ralph’s benevolence provides programmatic support and professional development opportunities, as well as a broad scholarship support system for students studying vocal performance.

The Ralph Opera Center performs two fully staged productions with orchestra each semester, as well as multiple opera scenes programs, spanning the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern eras.

Auditions for the Charles and Reta Ralph Opera Center are held at the beginning of each semester and are open to all CSU students.
