DePauw University's president connects with students

October 12, 2009

Brian W. Casey wants to make DePauw University, with an enrollment of about 2,400 students, one of the country's best liberal arts colleges.

Brian W. Casey, the new president of DePauw University in Indiana, and a 46-year-old historian from Harvard, says he has to talk to everyone on campus so everyone can be engaged in the mission: To turn DePauw into “a living and learning community of unmatched intellectual and creative energy, excitement and relevance.”

Nikki Craker, a senior and student body president, says: “He loves to talk to us. We love to talk. Everyone here wants community.’’

When Casey walks into the football stadium on game day, the students chant his name: “Bri-an Ca-sey! Bri-an Ca-sey!”

“I love colleges,” Dr. Casey said. “I love campuses. What’s the one place where people are thinking and writing and working and playing and growing up all in one place? It’s on campus. We’re at our best on campus.”
