Coats, cold weather gear needed for South Dakota's Pine Ridge Reservation

November 5, 2010

Once again members of the campus community are seeking donations of new or gently used winter outerwear to be delivered to Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Last year more than 800 coats were collected and delivered through the schools by teachers who know where the needs are the greatest.

8th largest reservation in the U.S.

The Pine Ridge Reservation is a Lakota reservation located in the southwest corner of South Dakota. The reservation is the eighth largest reservation in the United States, measuring 3,468 square miles with an approximate population of 28,787.

Unemployment is between 80 and 90 percent and life expectancy on the reservation is the lowest in the United States.

The drive will run through Dec. 3. The first donations will be delivered in November. Key Service Community members ask that students remember to bring back items from fall break!

Coats, hats, gloves, and socks

Coats, hats, gloves, socks, and other winter wear in sizes toddler to adult are urgently needed.

Organizers stress that only winter outwear items be donated as they do not have the resources to sort, store, or deliver other items.
