CSU-OfficeMax partnership

January 27, 2011

"CSU is committed to finding new operational efficiencies and to creating new revenue streams through innovative thinking," says Amy Parsons, vice president for Operations at CSU. The partnership with OfficeMax will accomplish both goals and many additional benefits.

Office Max graphicCSU & OfficeMax Program Announcement

After an extensive Request for Proposal (RFP) process and thorough review of proposals and options, we are pleased to announce that Colorado State University and OfficeMax®, a leader in office products and services, have entered into an innovative, strategic partnership that will save colleges, departments and university offices money on office supplies.

The partnership with OfficeMax, the new official office products supplier of the university, will additionally provide scholarships and internships to students, as well as significant office supply discounts to students, alumni and friends of the university.

Highlights of the new program include:

  • Approximately 14% contract cost savings on core list items (the 1000 most commonly purchased office supplies) for the University, Colorado State University Extension offices, Colorado State Forest Service offices and Agricultural Experiment Station offices. This is a 14% savings over what the University currently pays for those same office supplies.  In addition, non-core list office supplies will be discounted by category with discounts ranging from 20% up to 75% off of list price;
  • Next day delivery by a dedicated OfficeMax driver;
  • Leading edge environmental practices including deliveries made in reusable boxes and recycled general use office paper.

In addition to enjoying cost savings and efficiencies, working with OfficeMax will be an easier, more personalized experience for those who order supplies. Using the latest technology, CSU employees will place orders electronically via the University’s SciQuest e-Procurement connection, through its Kuali financial system, which provides the CSU community with an easy to use self-service buying approach via a “punch-out catalog.”

Along with these online capabilities, past order histories and preferences are instantly accessible to CSU employees, product returns can be processed online, and live online assistance is available when ordering.  CSU will enjoy next-day delivery on all orders placed prior to 4:00 p.m.

Colorado State employees can begin ordering OfficeMax supplies immediately. Please note, the Staples catalog will no longer be available beginning March 1, 2011. Training to use the Kuali-OfficeMax punch-out catalog will be provided for all interested CSU employees. Please see the training schedule at the bottom of this message.

In addition to the benefits experienced directly by the campus, CSU also benefits in the following areas:

  • Affinity Program discounts for all CSU students, alumni, friends and donors.  Discounted pricing will be available on the web and in the OfficeMax retail locations.  All sales generated from the Affinity Program will result in a 4 percent rebate back to the university.  For more information on the Affinity Program, visit the Alumni Association Web site.
  • CSU and OfficeMax will be partnering to hire interns as part of the strategic partnership.  Two paid internships will be available to CSU students each year, which will provide business experience and opportunities for these future leaders.  As the partnership builds, the number of paid internships may increase based on the volume and demand.
  • Beginning in year four of the partnership, OfficeMax will fund up to five $1,000 scholarships for CSU students per year when the Affinity Program rebates reach certain levels.
  • CSU and OfficeMax will collaborate on best-practices to further advance both organizations, including exploring ways to support Colorado State’s “green” initiatives with reduced waste and increased use of environmentally preferable products, including recycled and reusable products.
  • OfficeMax will also be collaborating with the CSU Bookstore by providing unique offerings to help support its operations, as well as providing retail solutions at the main campus bookstore, as well as the Denver center.  Details will be provided as they become available.
  • CSU and OfficeMax will also be exploring ways to collaborate and share ideas and best practices.  Some future endeavors may include having speakers from both organizations sharing training/teaching seminars.

Given the challenging economic times and tight budgets for higher education institutions, we believe this partnership not only provides clear benefits to the campus community, but also demonstrates another way CSU is working to be financially responsible and a good steward of public funds.

If you have questions about this partnership, training opportunities or ordering supplies, please contact Farrah Bustamante at 491-1992 or Valerie Scott at 491-6194.
