U.S. fares well in international ranking of college access and affordability

October 28, 2010

The United States offers some of the most affordable options for higher education in the world, with average costs at its state universities comparing well with public institutions in other countries.

A new report, "Global Higher Education Rankings 2010: Affordability and Accessibility in Comparative Perspective," was published Oct. 27 by Higher Education Strategy Associates, a Toronto-based consulting firm.

One key finding of the report is that the links between affordability and accessibility "are not as straightforward as some policy makers and analysts believe," says Alex Usher, lead author of the report.

Affordability, was defined as measures of a student's or a family's ability to cover costs associated with attending university, while accessibility refers to the relative size and composition of a country's student body.
