It's Showdown time: Rams ready to take on Buffs

September 14, 2011

The CSU Rams and CU Buffs square off Saturday in Denver in the 83rd renewal of a rivalry that dates to 1893.

Senior running back Raymond Carter rushed for 100 yards last week in CSU's 33-14 win over UNC.CSU’s 118-year-old rivalry with the University of Colorado will be renewed at 11:30 a.m. Saturday when the Rams and Buffs square off in the Cinch Jeans Rocky Mountain Showdown at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

The Rams, 2-0 following victories over New Mexico and Northern Colorado, will be looking for their first win over the Buffs since 2009. This will be the rivals’ 11th meeting in Denver, with CU holding a 6-4 advantage in games played in the Mile High City.

Thomas, Capi lead Rams

The Rams are led on offense by sophomore quarterback Pete Thomas, who has started every game in his CSU career and completed 66 percent of his passes. Last week he became the first sophomore in school history to surpass the 3,000-yard mark in career passing.

The defense will feature sophomore defensive end Nordly Capi, who set an NCAA record in the season-opening win over New Mexico when he forced four fumbles. He leads the nation in forced fumbles and total sacks (4.5).

The Rams were dealt a difficult blow vs. UNC, however, when standout senior linebacker Mychal Sisson suffered a broken ankle. Sisson is expected to miss at least two months but could return before season’s end.

Hansen leads Buffs

The Buffs are led on offense by senior quarterback Tyler Hansen and sophomore wide receiver Paul Richardson, who caught 11 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns last week in CU’s overtime loss to California.

CU’s defense is led by linebacker Douglas Rippy, who averages 10.5 tackles per game.
