Colo. facing a steep budget cliff for higher ed in July 2010

In the current budget year that ends in June, the state is using $377 million in stimulus funds for higher education, whose total state appropriation is $706 million, of which $329 million comes from the general fund. Next year, though, there is only $95 million in stimulus funding, and total state funding for higher education drops to $650 million.

The reduced stimulus money means that the general fund appropriation for higher education will have to increase to $555 million, the same amount the state provided in 2005-06 and the point below which the state can't cut funding and still receive stimulus funds.
