Ask Cam

Ram athletes are covered

September 2, 2009

Exactly how big is that new giant building over there by the athletic facilities and how much did it cost? Thanks, Cam.

Cam’s answer:

I believe you’re talking about the Indoor Practice Facility, one of three new buildings on campus designed to upgrade athletics and student recreation.

The $13.5 million Indoor Practice Facility is now open and rocking with Rams, who can practice safely during lightning storms, downpours, and dangerous winter cold.

The centerpiece of the 66,267-square-foot facility, located east of the Moby Arena complex, is an artificial-turf surface that’s 70 yards long and 53.33 yards wide, the same width as standard college football fields. The structure’s design allows for full practices including punting and kicking.

Amenities also include storage, meeting, and sports medicine rooms and state-of-the-art equipment to record practice sessions.

Multi-sport facility

Other athletes can use the indoor facility as well. Four 70-yard running lanes can be set up for sprinters and hurdlers. Temporary throwing circles can be used by athletes practicing the shot put and weight throw for the track teams.

And the spacious turf and drop-down batting cages provides the softball team with a place to hit and field ground balls during bad weather.

All this to help our Rams compete at the top of their game!
