Prof selected as finalist for 2010 Colorado Book Award

June 14, 2010

Gerald Callahan, a professor of English with a joint appointment in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology, has a new book that is a finalist for a Colorado Book Award.

Writes about science for general audiences

Gerald Callahan’s book, Between XX and XY: Intersexuality and the Myth of Two Sexes, has been selected as a finalist for the 2010 Colorado Book Awards by the Colorado Humanities & Center for the Book.

Callahan is a professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology, and the Department of English.

"This year's selectors read and discussed 145 entries to select these authors and their works for the Colorado Book Awards finalist level," says Josephine Jones, Colorado Humanities Director of Programs & Center for the Book.

Social parameter explored

In his book, Callahan explores the concept of two separate and distinct sexes (male and female) as a social parameter rather than a biological one. He elucidates an understanding of sex and gender variability based not only on chromosomal structure, but genetic disorders and anatomical structures in intersex individuals who are neither male nor female.

This is Dr. Callahan’s fourth book, following other publications including Faith, Madness and Spontaneous Combustion; Infection: The Uninvited Universe; and River Odyssey: A Story of the Colorado Plateau.
