Few embody this application of classroom knowledge to their own lives as well as Ryan Donovan from the Department of Health and Exercise Science, who, on May 5, won the Colorado Marathon for the third time in his life, and for the second year in a row.

"As someone who works in a health-related field, I think it's very important to lead by example. This is a message I share with my students in every class I teach," Donovan said. "While this doesn't mean they need to win marathons, or even enjoy running, I hope that I can inspire them to live a purposeful life that includes regular physical activity."

Donovan graduated from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with a B.S. in exercise and sport science and a concentration in fitness and strength and conditioning before earning his master's in health and exercise science at CSU.

Third time winning

First winning the Colorado Marathon in 2009, and then again in 2012, Donovan was ecstatic to take home the title two years in a row, this time with a time of 2:29:36 – almost 10 minutes faster than the next place finisher.

"The Colorado Marathon is always one of my favorite races. The feeling of winning in front of a 'home-town' crowd in Fort Collins is absolutely wonderful," Donovan said. "More importantly, however, winning this year's race is validation that hard work pays off and that success requires commitment and perseverance. These are also lessons that I incorporate into my teaching whenever possible."

The Department of Health and Exercise Science is in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Colorado State University.
