Message from Coach Hilbert to Ram Volleyball supporters

October 19, 2009

The Ram Volleyball team played two of their most complete matches Saturday and Thursday. As a result of their successful weekend they are back in the Top 25 at No. 25 this week.

Hello Ram Volleyball Supporters:

We are floating on Cloud 8 right now. I would say Cloud 9 but we are only 8-0 and I don’t want to get ahead of myself. The Ram Volleyball team played two of their most complete matches Saturday and Thursday.

We swept BYU and Utah and did it in dominating fashion. We beat our opponents in every statistical category and our opponents were not giving us free points. We were earning points and playing at a VERY high level. As a result of our weekend we are back in the Top 25 at No. 25 this week. We should stay there if we keep winning.

Defense wins matches

Defense was one of the keys. In both matches we out dug our opponents more than 20 digs. This only translates into a win if you kill the balls you dig. That is called the “transition game” and we did exactly that. We had 18 kills in each game against the Utes -- that is almost unheard of.

The anchor to our defense was Katelin Batten. Batty was phenomenal on Saturday setting a school record for digs in a three-set match. Considering the record was set by Kelly Barnes prior to rally scoring that is really good.

Chalk Talk at Stonehouse Grille - 5 p.m. Oct. 20

Batty will be our special guest at our Tuesday afternoon gathering at the Stonehouse Grille in downtown Fort Collins. I would really like to get everyone interested in learning more about volleyball to come to this event. You get to meet Batty and eat some great food all for only $8.

It all starts at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Next Up: TCU and New Mexico

New Mexico has a blemish that past weekend losing to UNLV but TCU remains solid and is tied with Utah for second place. The match against TCU Thursday night is televised on The Mtn. network so be sure and tune in to watch.

If you don’t get The Mtn. network, then patronize one of our many local sports bars and they will show it. The match is also broadcast on KCSU.

Chalk Talk - Clarify new rules

My Chalk Talk on Tuesday will go back to basics and talk about rules again. There seems to be some confusion about some of the new rules, the calls being made, and which official is responsible for what calls. I plan to talk about all of those items which will allow you, the fan, to be more knowledgeable than most so you can set the officials straight during the matches.

Seriously, bring your favorite questions about rules and I will try to answer them.

Hope to see all of you on Tuesday as we prepare for our trip down South!
