U.S. Census issues guidelines for universities

September 26, 2009

The U.S. Census Bureau is providing guidance to colleges and universities regarding the 2010 head count, advising them that they can give out students' directory information while remaining in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. The bureau will request information about on-campus students in order to distribute census forms.

The Bureau has indicated that census takers will visit colleges and universities on three occasions. Between Sept. 28 to Oct. 23, Bureau representatives will visit institutions to determine if group living quarters, such as college residence halls and dormitories, exist at the school.

The number of dorms and the identity of the contact official will be verified sometime between Feb. 1 and March 12, 2010.

Between April 1 and May 14, 2010, Bureau representatives will ask for “directory information” on the students living in group housing.

The Bureau has indicated that this whole process has to be completed by May 14, 2010.
