2009 Celebrate Colorado State! Awards announced

Colorado State University Interim President Tony Frank announced the top campus awards for 2008-2009 at the Celebrate Colorado State Awards reception Tuesday afternoon.

University Distinguished Profs

The title of University Distinguished Professor - the highest recognition awarded for outstanding accomplishments in research and scholarship - was bestowed on three professors at the annual Celebrate Colorado State event.

Collectively, these world renowned professors have made great strides in diverse fields of science, but share a common goal to improve global health and environment issues. They have garnered more than $100 million in research grants, taught hundreds of students who now make contributions around the world, and have influenced scientific thought in their field. They are:

  • C. Wayne McIlwraith, professor of Veterinary Medicine and director of Colorado State University's Gail E. Holmes Equine Orthopaedic Research Center
  • Ian Orme, professor and researcher of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology and co-founder of the Colorado State University’s Mycobacteria Research Laboratory
  • Diana Wall, professor of Biology and director of Colorado State University’s School of Global Environmental Sustainability

University Distinguished Teaching Scholar

Toni Schindler Zimmerman was named a University Distinguished Teaching Scholar. Zimmerman is a professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. She directs the Marriage and Family Therapy program at the university.

The designation as a University Distinguished Teaching Scholar remains with the recipient until he or she leaves the university. Scholars are chosen in an open process that begins with the selection of nominees by departments throughout campus.

Biology researcher honored with Scholarship Impact Award

Alan Knapp, a professor renowned for his research on ecosystems processes in grassland habitats has been named this year’s recipient of the Scholarship Impact Award, one of the highest annual honors given by the university.

The award recognizes faculty whose scholarship has had a major impact nationally and/or internationally. The award includes a plaque of recognition and $10,000 in funding to support the recipient’s research program.

Knapp is best known for his research in physiological plant ecology. Scientists in this field seek to understand how plants respond physiologically to changes in the physical and biotic environment and how such responses influence the distribution and abundance of various plant species. Knapp’s major scientific contributions have redefined the understanding of vegetation dynamics and productivity in grassland ecosystems.

Business professor receives BOG teaching award

Margarita Maria Lenk, a longtime business professor known for her commitment to students, has been honored by the Board of Governors of the Colorado State University System with the annual Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award.

Lenk, an associate professor in the departments of Accounting and Computer Information Systems within the College of Business, has been a role model in innovation in learning as well as in recruiting and fostering success of students of color.

Monfort Professors

Established by the Monfort Family Foundation, this program enables Colorado State to recruit and retain top-quality faculty. These competitively-selected, two-year appointments recognize and provide support for innovative teaching and research activities. Newly named Monfort Professors are:

  • Rajiv Khosla, associate professor of Agricultural Science (2008-2010)
  • Venkatesan Manivannan, associate professor of Engineering (2008-2010)
  • Frank Dinenno, associate professor of Health and Exercise Science (2009-2011)
  • Jacob Roberts, assistant professor of Physics (2009-2011)
