Rams' season ends at MWC Tournament

March 8, 2011

The CSU women's basketball team saw its season come to a disappointing conclusion Tuesday with a loss to Air Force on Tuesday in the opening round.

Freshman forward Sam Martin (12) had 17 points and 12 rebounds Tuesday but it wasn't enough to lead the Rams past Air Force at the MWC Tournament.LAS VEGAS -- Alicia Leipprandt scored a career-high 26 points and Raimee Beck added 16 points and 15 rebounds as ninth-seeded Air Force upset No. 4 seed CSU 66-63 on Tuesday in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament at UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center.

The loss ended the season for the Rams (14-16). Air Force goes on to play Utah at 5:30 p.m. today in the second round, with a berth in the Friday semifinals on the line.

The trailed 35-31 at halftime but rallied to take the lead in the second half, only to see the Falcons reclaim the lead in the final minutes. Bonnie Barbee scored five consecutive points to give the Rams a 63-60 lead, but they did not score again as Air Force won just its second MWC Tournament game in the program's history. CSU beat Air Force twice during the regular season.

Freshman forward Sam Martin, voted a third-team all-MWC selection Monday, led the Rams with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Barbee -- one of three CSU seniors playing in their final game -- added 10. Junior forward Kim Mestdagh, a second-team all-MWC pick, added 12 points but was 0-for-9 on 3-point attempts. Mestdagh entered as one of the most accurate 3-point shooters in the conference.

The CSU men open tournament play at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, taking on New Mexico in the quarterfinals.
