CSU Memorial Services Planned For David McCabe

A memorial service at Colorado State University is planned from 4-5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, in the Behavioral Sciences Building Room 131.

David McCabeDavid Peter McCabe was born in Valley Stream N.Y. to Teresa and Peter McCabe on November 8, 1969. When David was two years old they moved to Glen Head N.Y. where he grew up with his older brother Paul, younger brother Mark and sister Christina. When David was growing up he enjoyed playing little league baseball, football, basketball and kickball with his brother Paul and neighborhood friends. In addition to sports, he spent a lot of time playing in the pond behind his home in Glen Head where he caught fish, frogs, turtles and snakes.

As a teenager, music was an important part of his life. He spent time listening to his favorite bands such as Rush, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest, and Ozzy Osbourne. He even dabbled in learning to play an electric guitar and was a singer in a band. He and his brother Paul frequently went to the Sea Cliff youth center where the played foosball together.

David attended North Shore High School and graduated in 1987. From there he attended and graduated from the State University of NY - Institute of Technology (SUNY-IT). While living in Utica, David met Jeannine and got married. Together they moved to Georgia in 1999, as David was accepted for graduate school at Georgia Technological Institute. There he studied memory and cognition with Anderson Smith and Randall Engle and received his Masters degree in 2001 and his PhD. in 2003 in Psychology. His daughter Sarah was born while they were in Atlanta.

From there David and his family moved to St. Louis and a position at Washington University where he took a Postdoctoral Fellowship through the National Institute on Aging and worked with Henry Roediger and David Balota. His time there was fruitful both personally and professionally and fostered many strong friendships that would last throughout the rest of his life. His daughter Rachel was born while they were in St Louis.

In 2006, David and his family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, where he was hired as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Colorado State University. David's career at Colorado State was outstanding by any measure. He was a prolific researcher, authoring numerous scientific publications in memory that gained him wide respect in his field. He had an equally sterling reputation as a teacher and mentor and influenced many students. Friends, colleagues, and students alike marveled at his prodigious wit, his wonderful humor, and his kindness.

David was an avid fan of the Denver Broncos, even long before he moved to Colorado. He enjoyed playing and watching sports, reading, being with friends, and, most of all, spending time with his daughters.

David is survived by his beautiful daughters Sarah and Rachel, his parents Peter and Teresa McCabe, his brothers Paul McCabe and Mark McCabe, his sister Christina McCabe, and countless friends.
