U.S. Postal Service rate increase is effective April 17

The U.S. Postal Service has announced new postage rates for First-Class Mail effective April 17, 2011.

While postage for many First-Class mail pieces will increase, the good news for many departments is that 1-ounce letters will remain unchanged at 44 cents.

Rate adjustment highlights
  • One-ounce First-Class letters remain at 44 cents.
  • Postage for each additional ounce increases to 20 cents per ounce for all First-Class pieces.
  • First-Class Flats and Parcels will increase on average 3.8% to 5.3% respectively.
  • Postcards increase to 29 cents.
  • First-Class letters destined to Canada or Mexico increase to 80 cents.
  • First-Class letters destined to all other countries remains unchanged at 98 cents.
  • Rates for Express Mail and Priority Mail will not see a change.
  • Nonprofit and Business Reply letters 1 ounce and under will remain virtually unchanged with an average increase of less than 1.5%.
