15th annual Holocaust & Genocide Awareness Week

The 15th annual Holocaust and Genocide Awareness Week begins Feb. 28 at Colorado State University and includes daily events to increase awareness of genocide around the world.

The week begins with the Field of Flags on the Lory Student Center Plaza, representing the deaths of Jews, Russians, Gypsies, and the other groups targeted in the Holocaust. The flags will remain there throughout the week.

Litany of Martyrs

Litany of Martyrs, a reading of names of Holocaust victims, will take place daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., from Feb. 28 through March 3, in Lory Student Center Sunken Lounge. A reading of the names of all Holocaust victims would take over 500 days.

Special events to be held Feb. 28 - March 4

Additionally, there will be special events held on each day of the week from Feb. 28 to March 4.

  • On Monday, Feb. 28, the special event is a series of Holocaust survivors’ stories at 7 p.m. in the LSC Theater.
  • On Tuesday, March 1 at 7 p.m. in the Lory Student Theater, there will be a screening of the film “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas,” a fictional story of the young son of a Nazi befriending a Jewish child confined in a concentration camp.

Daniel MagilowDaniel Magilow presents keynote speech March 2

Daniel Magilow will share his knowledge of the Holocaust in a keynote speech, “Children and the Afterlife of the Holocaust," on Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. in the LSC Theater. Magilow has studied Yizkor - translated as “remembrance” books - for many years and has devoted his life to study of the Holocaust.

Joseph Sebarenzi speaks March 3

Former head of the Rwandan Parliament, Joseph Sebarenzi, will speak at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 3 in the LSC Theater for the annual Genocide Awareness Panel. Sebarenzi was forced to flee his home country out of fear of assassination Joseph Sebarenzi and now speaks about conflict resolution and his experience in Rwanda.

Memorial Service March 4

The week concludes on Friday, March 4 with a memorial service at 3 p.m. in the LSC Theater in remembrance of all the victims of the Holocaust with song, prayer and a candlelight vigil.

CSU's 15th annual Holocaust and Genocide Awareness week
