YPO to perform 'The Little Prince'

November 10, 2011

The Young Producers Organization, a student group which provides hands-on experience in all aspects of theatre production, will make a departure from college theatre this week in the production of 'The Little Prince.'

Theatre by young producers

The Young Producers Organization is a student group providing hands-on experience in all aspects of theatre production.

In addition to directing their own plays, theatre students are responsible for casting, design, sound, props, lighting, costumes, and marketing.

The organization’s renown has grown, and attending the productions in the intimate space of the acting lab has become a popular campus activity.

Innovation award

The Young Producers Organization won the Outstanding Student Innovation award at Colorado State's  2011 Student Organization and Advisor Recognition (SOAR) Ceremony on April 28, 2011.

New direction in new production

The Young Producers Organization, making a bold move away from college theatre, presents 'The Little Prince,' a family-friendly production of the beloved classic. The 1943 novella upon which the play is based was ostensibly a children's book; however, it makes several profound and idealistic observations about life and human nature.

The Little Prince, one of the best-selling books ever published, has been the basis for a musical, film musical, anime series, a 3-part symphony, and a Grammy award-winning recording.

Seating

Only 20 reserved seats (half the available seating) may be reserved online for each YPO performance. Reserved seating is no longer available for The Little Prince. The remaining seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The performances will be held in the 2nd floor, Large Acting Lab in the University Center for the Arts and are free and open to the public. The dates and times are:

  • Friday, November 11, 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, November 12, 2 p.m.
  • Saturday, November 12, 8 p.m.
  • Sunday, November 13, 2 p.m.

Play synopsis

An aviator whose plane is forced down in the Sahara Desert encounters a little prince from a small planet who relates his adventures in seeking the secret of what is important in life.

Story 'life-changing' experience

The Little Prince was adapted and directed by CSU theatre major Irina Yakubovskaya.

"I really hope that this story will  touch people's hearts," Yakubovskaya says. "Little Prince is about eternal feelings surrounding love, friendship, loss, and loneliness. The story is also about the limitations of human mind and the limitlessness of the human soul.

"Many aspects of this production were inspired  by very personal emotions from my life experience, but the show also became very personal and special for all the cast and crew. The Little Prince is a life changing experience for those who did the show, and we hope that it will be also a significant experience for the audience."
