Younger professors value efficiency and believe quality is more important than quantity in academic work

A new student commissioned by the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education, a long-term project run by Harvard's Graduate School of Education, has found that "Generation X" professors value efficiency over "face time" and believe that quality is more important than quantity in academic work.

Generation X professor perceive their attitudes to be different from those of older faculty member, who they see as being completely devoted to their jobs and unable to say no to more work.

One Gen X faculty member told the researchers, "I want to succeed, but I don't want to work 18 hours a day."
