Former Ram and NFL star to speak Thursday

Gregory L. Primus, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon in Chicago and a former CSU Ram and NFL Chicago Bears wide receiver, will speak at 7 p.m. Feb. 5 in Room 228 of the Lory Student Center, as part of CSU's Black History Month celebration.

Greg PrimusPrior to joining Orland Park Orthopedics in the suburbs of Chicago, Ill., Dr. Primus' medical career followed a remarkable career as a wide receiver in the NFL, both with the Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos, and as a four-year letter winner at Colorado State University.

After breaking records at Colorado State, which stood for 13 years, Dr. Primus was inducted into CSU’s Hall of Fame in 2003.

Dr. Primus completed his sports medicine training at the Southern California Center for Sports Medicine. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Chicago Hospitals, and medical school at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

Nye Trophy winner 1992-1993

Primus was selected as the recipient of the Nye Trophy, the athletic department's oldest continuing honor, given annually to the most outstanding male athlete since its inception in 1929.

The Nye Trophy, named for Colonel E.L. Nye, a former professor of pathology and bacteriology who lettered in track at CSU (1913-1914 and 1919) and his brother, Dr. William Nye, who lettered multiple times in football, basketball and track and field from 1915-1919, is given annually to a senior who is in good academic standing and has observed all the rules of training and competition, while showing character and conduct in keeping with the highest tradition of CSU.

Only two athletes have won the award twice. Pat Durham, men’s basketball also won in 1988-1989.
