Mountain West campuses face bad budgets, fast growth

States in the Mountain West are facing some of the nation's biggest financial challenges and, at the same time, are also predicted to experience some of the fastest growth in college enrollments.

Many states in the region have been heavily reliant on a temporary pot of money to bolster their spending on higher education, signaling potential trouble for appropriations in coming years.

For the 2010 fiscal year, just over 22 percent of state money that went to higher education in Colorado came from federal stimulus funds, according to the State Higher Education Executive Officers. That was the second-highest proportion, behind Massachusetts, in the country.
