March 23, 2012

Feeling a little rusty? Come brush up on your restorative justice facilitator skills. The Conflict Resolution and Student Conduct Services office is offering a 4-hour refresher class on restorative justice using the group conferencing model.

Restorative justice is a departure from conventional approaches to redress in our society and judicial system. Wednesday, April 4
3-7 p.m.
325 Aylesworth Hall NW

A refresher on restorative justice

If you’ve previously completed restorative justice facilitator training but would like to brush up on your skills, this session is for you. The refresher training is free and open to students, faculty, and staff.

Restorative justice is a departure from conventional approaches to redress in our society and judicial system. Instead of focusing on rule of law, blame, and punishment, the process focuses on harm caused, obligation, and healing.

The method: Restorative justice

The restorative justice process involves a group conference which brings offenders face-to-face with the people that they have harmed. Together in a circle, the incident is discussed, agreements are made to repair the harm, relationships are restored, and healing is facilitated.

The refresher class will include the following topics:

  • Discussion on importance of pre-conferencing
  • Case studies: Lessons learned
  • Role play/fishbowl exercise
  • Agreement writing
  • Protocol/procedures for conflict resolution cases
  • Facilitator reflections

Please bring questions/topics for discussion

Bring questions and be ready for group discussion so all participants leave better equipped to facilitate a restorative justice conference. The workship includes a break during which dinner will be provided.
