State Classified Benefits Open Enrollment May 14-28

May 12, 2009

Due to the budget crisis, the State had to delay this year's Open Enrollment for State Classified employee benefits. Because of the delay, Open Enrollment will be reduced to a two week period, May 14-28. All new enrollments or changes must be processed via the State's on-line system, BenefitSolver, during this two week window.

While the State has informed us that there will not be significant plan design changes to either the medical or dental plans for FY10, employees are encouraged to carefully review the plan descriptions available on the State’s website at:

(click on "medical insurance" and select the applicable plan)

Increased out-of-pocket costs

The State has posted the FY10 premiums and there are increases in the medical and dental plans that employees will see in their out-of-pocket costs for premiums in the coming year, some as high as 62.8 percent, as well as reductions in some cases. The consequences can be significant for employees who fail to consider these changes during Open Enrollment.

Further, the State is requiring employees to participate in Open Enrollment even if they are not changing plans or coverage levels due to new federal regulations from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that require the collection of social security numbers for dependents enrolled in medical plans.

Finally, the State has informed us that they will be holding a separate Open Enrollment at a later date for Optional Life insurance once they have solidified the FY10 premiums.

As a result, you are strongly encouraged to take advantage of all of the information and support available during Open Enrollment.
