New collaboration promotes awareness about sexual assault prevention

The Employee Assistance Program announces a new collaboration with the Sexual Assault Victim Advocate Center (The SAVA Center).

CSU’s Office of the Ombuds and EAP is offering Sexual Assault: What it is and How to Stop it for CSU staff. This is a free, noon-hour training on Tuesday, April 17, in Room 129 Johnson Hall.

The Sava Center’s prevention programs are promoting effective sexual violence prevention efforts in Larimer and Weld County by:

  • Addressing the root causes of sexual violence, including cultural beliefs about power and traditional gender roles
  • Promoting healthy relationships skills, such as:
    • increased self-esteem & self-efficacy effective interpersonal boundaries;
    • expanding understandings of gender expression beyond power, violence and sexuality; and
    • increasing social-activism and leadership skills – creating opportunities for boys and men to be equally responsible for preventing sexual assault as girls and women.
  • Educating community members how to help and support others

This training will include:

  • Definitions - the language we use and what things mean
  • Statistics- illustrating the scope and nature of the problem (not too many numbers, though)
  • SAVA’s prevention philosophy- focuses on changing the culture and preventing people from assaulting others
  • Facts and myths around sexual assault - addresses the victim

Registration is not required but is appreciated.
