Ask Cam

Sleepless in Fort Collins

March 17, 2010

Cam, Since you have connections with CSU veterinarian science experts, I thought you might be able to help me with something I’m curious about. I keep hearing more and more people complain of not sleeping very well, and in many cases, they mention their indoor (de-clawed) cat that doesn't sleep through the night.

I’m wondering how many people suffer from poor sleep due to their pets (are cats worse than dogs?). Is there any research on this? And is there a way to make a cat sleep all night?!

Cam’s answer:

Silly cats, bantering around at night like that! Problem is, their two-legged companions don’t share the same proclivities for nocturnal dalliance. (And I’ve been waiting years to say “nocturnal dalliance”!)

You’re right about one thing – I know some of the esteemed veterinarians at the hospital because they keep me in tip-top shape. But so far, the veterinarians I’ve talked to have been scratching their heads over your questions. I’m sure they’d be glad to track down some answers if they weren’t so busy.

Excellent alternative

Here’s an excellent alternative: The annual Cat Care Conference is coming up at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital on Saturday, April 3.

Topics will include complementary medicine, pain management, tips for navigating emergency situations, feline dentistry, and common feline cancers. I’m willing to bet you can cozy up to a veterinarian at the conference and find some answers to your interesting questions.

The conference is free, but registration is strongly encouraged by sending an e-mail to with the names of all people attending plus a contact’s e-mail address and phone number.

Cat's cradle

In the meantime, take a look at a site I found on the Web that has tips on how to deal with sleep deprivation caused by sleepless cats.

If you’re still desperate for 40 winks, picture a bunch of green & gold Rams jumping over a fence!

Yours in REM,
Cam the Ram
