Workouts on campus get an upgrade

July 29, 2010

As the 2010-2011 school year begins, students will take notice of the new facilities and tennis courts that the Student Recreation Center has been working diligently on all summer.

New tennis courts for Ram Tennis, public

The new tennis court complex nearing completion, is located off Centre Avenue northwest of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

When the new Athletic Department Indoor Practice Facility was built where the original tennis courts were located, the previous CSU president decided to include the new tennis court project with the Student Recreation Center expansion project.

The new tennis court complex (still under construction) located off Centre Avenue northwest of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, is comprised of 12 outdoor courts - eight of which have lights. According to Judy Muenchow, Executive Director of Campus Recreation, the project was built as part of the Student Recreation Center bond project and was therefore funded by student activity fee dollars.

"While they were constructed to NCAA specifications that will permit CSU Athletic Department competitions to be held on the courts, they are scheduled and maintained by CSU Facilities Management. When the courts are not scheduled for an event or the varsity tennis team practice, they are available for use by the public," said Muenchow.

Campus Rec nearing completion

The new cafe is located in the main lobby of the Student Recreation Center.

According to Muenchow, additional funding has allowed for additional facility features such as a martial arts and boxing room as well as more courts for basketball, volleyball, and badminton. "In addition, the additional funding will permit the complete renovation of the pool area, which was not originally in the project," added Muenchow.

Currently, the west half of the original Student Recreation Center is in the final stages of construction. This includes:

  • four-court gymnasium
  • track
  • cardio-weight areas
  • gender-inclusive changing rooms
  • two assessment/consultation rooms
  • the custodial/maintenance shop

Come August, there will be more courts available for basketball, volleyball, and badminton.

The pool renovation will begin in August and require approximately six months to renovate.

With the exception of the pool renovation, the Student Recreation Center will be completed and fully operational by Aug. 20.

Reviving the look

According to Muenchow, Campus Recreation decided to upgrade its website to one that would:

  • refresh the appearance
  • improve navigation on the site by users
  • permit additional features such as online registration and payment for activities and classes

The Campus Recreation website will be fully functional by August.
