The legend of the Phyllis Diller rhinestone bra

April 22, 2009

Diller's famous rhinestone bra (she wore a bodysuit underneath it)
Mister Cam, someone told me that CSU's new design museum is home to Phyllis Diller's bra. Who is Phyllis Diller, and why do we have her underwear?

Cam’s response:

Well, shave my wool and spin it into yarn! I had forgotten all about Ms. Diller’s addition to our collection.

For starters, Phyllis Diller is a legendary stage and screen actress who seemed to be everywhere in the 1960s. The rhinestone bra, together with an ostrich feather skirt, were purportedly part of a costume she wore for a Las Vegas show. It was designed by the famed “worst-dressed” critic Mr. Blackwell, who donated many other items to Colorado State University over the years.

The rhinestone bra is part of CSU’s Avenir Museum of Design and Merchandising.
