Verizon named CSU's new official cellphone provider

April 10, 2013

Conversion from Sprint will be completed on a department-by-department basis.

After many months of discussion, Verizon has been selected as CSU’s new cellphone service provider.

While transitioning from the existing carrier (Sprint) will require new phones for approximately 2,000 current subscribers, individual phone numbers will remain the same after the move to Verizon.

CSU and Verizon will partner to facilitate the switch on a department-by-department basis. The migration will begin with Facilities Management, Housing and Dining Services, and Parking, as these departments have a high percentage of push-to-talk users – a service that Sprint/Nextel plans to discontinue by June.

All existing Sprint corporate accounts should be moved to Verizon before the beginning of fall semester.

Do not contact Verizon

As the details for the conversion are worked out, the university will be in touch with each departmental billing contact person to set up a time to move from Sprint to Verizon. Between now and then, cellphone users should not contact Verizon directly or go to the Verizon store to switch carriers.

“Individuals won’t be able to get the same discount rates and other advantages offered through the CSU corporate plan, so we ask everyone to be patient while we roll out the new service,” explained Jamie McCue from CSU’s Telecommunications department.

Anyone who has an immediate need for equipment or service should send an email to and explain the situation.

“We’ll do whatever is possible to minimize service interruption,” McCue said.
