Academic spousal hiring challenges, intricacies

Spousal hiring is often described as a "problem" to be solved, or as "the next great challenge facing universities," to quote "Dual-Career Academic Couples," an influential 2008 report published by Stanford University.

David A. Bell, former dean of faculty in the arts and sciences school at the Johns Hopkins University and current professor of history at Princeton University, believes spousal hiring is not a challenge that higher education needs to face in the future -- it's already been faced and it is clearly benefical, though the purely ad hoc, case-by-case manner in which it is often handled, leaves a great deal to be desired.

Bell argues that colleges and university should now address the question of how to manage it fairly and effectively.
