Carl Jacob Hoffman, 82, of Bozeman, Mont., died peacefully Feb. 22, 2009, in Billings, Mont., surrounded by loving family. Carl was born Jan. 28, 1927, in Fort Morgan to Jacob and Pauline Hoffman.

Colorado State alumnus

After serving two years in the Army, Carl enrolled at Colorado State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science in 1952, and a Master of Science degree in Education in 1958. Carl then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison on a Kellogg Fellowship, earning a Ph.D. in Administration in 1962.

Carl combined his love of farming and agriculture with his passion for life-long learning, and began a career with the Extension service that spanned over 30 years. Carl served as a 4-H agent in Wray, and then as a county extension agent in Julesburg. In 1957, Carl and family returned to Fort Collins and Colorado State University where he took on the responsibility as associate director Extension.

Administrator, teacher

One of Carl's most significant accomplishments at CSU came when he founded the Center for Continuing Education in 1967. Carl's considerable contributions were formally recognized by the university at the dedication of Spruce Hall, as the new home for Continuing Education.

In 1975, Carl accepted the position of Vice President of Extension and Continuing Education at Montana State University, a position he held until his retirement in 1986.

Carl was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. While president of Farmhouse fraternity in 1951, he met his future wife, Marjorie Landeck. They married June 14, 1952, and remained happily married until his death. Besides his wife Marge, Carl is survived by three children, Rob Hoffman (Linda) of Fort Collins, Kimberlee Shriver (Scott) of Billings, Mont., and Mark Hoffman (Tammy) of Highlands Ranch; two sisters, Leona (Hoover) of Rocky Ford, and Lois (Meis) of Denver; and grandchildren, Michael, Ryan, Tyson, Alyssa, Carly, Adam, and Alec.
