Interdisciplinary water resources seminar

Jeffrey Niemann with the Colorado State University Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was invited to the White House in 2002 to accept the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers for his research in hydrology and geomorphology. On Thursday, Feb. 26 at noon, he will be sharing the results of his research into how to control soil moisture in semiarid settings.

The CSU Colorado Water Center will host the Spring 2009 Interdisciplinary Water Resources Seminar on Thursday, Feb. 26 at noon in the Lory Student Center, room 226.

Jeffrey Niemann from the Colorado State Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will speak about Controls on soil moisture in a semiarid setting and an associated method for soil moisture estimation.  

Estimating soil moisture patterns

Niemann will summarize what he's learned about the relationship between soil moisture and topography in his research that examines the transition between shrubland and forest ecosystems in the Front Range of Colorado.

He will discuss two nonlinear estimation methods and compare them to a standard linear estimation method. 

Expert in hydrology and geomorphology

Jeffrey Niemann joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering as an assistant professor in August 2003. He earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in civil and environmental engineering and earned a B.S. with High Distinction in civil engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Niemann’s research interests are in hydrology and geomorphology. He has studied statistical properties of river networks, long-term erosion and sedimentation in river basins, dependence of soil moisture on topography, estimation of soil moisture from remote-sensing, evaporative upflux from shallow groundwater, and uncertainty in hydrologic and sediment-transport modeling.
