Colo. budget plan back at square one

Lawmakers started looking Wednesday for ways to cut the budget further or raise revenue after a plan to transfer $500 million from a state-chartered workers' compensation fund fell through.

The threat to cut $300 million from the state's colleges and universities is suddenly off the table. Instead, lawmakers are considering a variety of ideas, including: 

  • furloughing state workers
  • cutting fees paid to doctors and hospitals that care for Medicaid patients
  • removing sales-tax exemptions on cigarettes and vending-machine sales
