School is Cool celebrates 20 years of supporting local students

July 13, 2011

For two decades, the School is Cool program has provided school supplies to less fortunate children in the Poudre School District to make sure they have the supplies needed to start the school year off right.

Decades of service

As School is Cool enters its 20th year, the program continues to provide valuable materials to school-aged children as the program expands to meet growing needs.

This year, the goal is to help 2,650 students. Last year, 2,516 packs and bags were distributed to 46 Poudre School District elementary, middle school and high schools. Each school determines which students will receive the supplies based on need. Families interested in obtaining School is Cool supplies should contact their home schools directly. Backpacks are not available at or through CSU.

Since 1992, School is Cool has provided free school supplies to more than 24,000 local students.

Backpacks are filled with grade-level appropriate supplies such as notebooks, pens, rulers, crayons and erasers. Scientific calculators are included in all middle school backpacks.

Our super volunteers

Colorado State University employees and community members volunteer their time to organize and stuff backpacks and book bags. The filled backpacks are then delivered to each school requesting supplies.

Organizing activities will take place Aug. 16, stuffing will be held Aug. 17 and deliveries occur on Aug. 18. All activities are held at 222 Johnson Hall on the CSU main campus.

How you can support School is Cool:
  • donate and sponsor one backpack;
  • shop for supplies on your own and donate them;
  • become a department representative; or
  • volunteer.

Department representatives are key to the success of the program and are invited to attend an information meeting from 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 6 in room 104 of the TILT Building. Please contact Susan Cavender at 491-6675 if you are interested in this important role.

School supplies are purchased in high volume, which means the average cost to fill one backpack is $20, including the bag. Although donations are accepted year-round, please give by Aug. 5 to have the donation count toward the 2011-2012 school year.

Generous support

The School is Cool program is generously supported by the Bohemian Foundation with assistance from the CSU Bookstore and Fort Collins community.
