Title IX rules

On June 25, 2013, the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) published another Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) related to Title IX.

Pregnant, parenting

This time the DCL addressed pregnancy and parenting issues, and explicitly stated that schools were prohibited from excluding pregnant students (or students who have been pregnant) from participating in any part of an educational program, including extracurricular activities.

In addition to the letter, OCR also published a pamphlet intended to help guide institutions when dealing with pregnant or parenting students. However, both the DCL and the accompanying pamphlet focused mainly on addressing pregnancy and parenting issues in a high school setting.

Webinar addresses several issues

Join the Adult Learner and Veteran Services office for a webinar answering the following questions:

  • What does this mean for institutions of higher education?
  • How will our selective admissions programs, programs involving cohorts or sequence-based courses be affected?
  • Will we need to create new programs?
  • What are other institutions doing to address Title IX pregnancy and parenting issues on their campuses?
