The Music Program collaborates with Opera Fort Collins Apprentice Artists in a concert version of 'The Secret Garden,' an enchanting classic of children's literature by composer Lucy Simon and Marsha Norman, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright.
The end of the 2014 Conducting Seminar at Colorado State University will be marked by a concert version of The Secret Garden by Marsha Norman, with musical arrangements by Lucy Simon.
The story is based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett about a spoiled, orphaned girl who goes to live with her reclusive uncle on his estate on the Yorkshire moors.
Upon arrival, Mary interacts with the housekeeper, Mrs. Medlock.
Mary: Is it always so ugly here?
Mrs. Medlock: It's the moor. Miles and miles of wild land that nothing grows on but heather and gorse and broom, and nothing lives on but wild ponies and sheep.
Mary discovers a mysterious, neglected, half-wild garden, as well as the son of her uncle shut away in a room in the manor.
This concert is a part of a fun summer tradition created by the music program. CSU will collaborate with Opera Fort Collins Apprentice Artists to present a delightful concert version of this popular musical.
The entire concert will be directed by students from the Summer Conducting Seminar.
