Paul Thayer honored for pre-collegiate work

March 23, 2009

The Colorado Statewide Pre-Collegiate Conference honored Paul Thayer, associate vice president for Student Affairs and special advisor to the Provost for Retention, last Friday with the second annual Cynthia Gayles Memorial Award. The award honors an individual who has provided exemplary services in the field of postsecondary transitions, helping students to access and succeed in college-level studies.

Champion for students

Thayer’s career has focused on student access to and graduation from postsecondary education. At Colorado State University, he focused on student retention while previously serving as executive director of the Center for Advising and Student Achievement, director of Undergraduate Student Retention, and director of the Center for Educational Access and Outreach. He is a member of Governor Ritter’s P-20 Education Advisory Council.

Dedicated professional

The Colorado Statewide Pre-Collegiate Conference brings together over high school counselors, admissions officers, pre-collegiate service providers (such as GEAR UP, the TRiO Programs and AVID), administrators and policy-makers to address the challenges facing Colorado’s students who wish to proceed to college level studies.

Co-chaired by representatives of College In Colorado, the Community College of Denver and CESDA (Colorado Educational Services and Development Association), the Conference focuses on solutions to the Colorado Paradox and Governor Ritter’s Colorado Promise (to close Colorado’s Achievement Gaps, to halve the dropout rate and double the number of home-grown College Certificates and Degrees).
