CSU presents OnlinePlus Innovative Educator Award

May 23, 2013

Colorado State University was proud to present the inaugural OnlinePlus Innovative Educator Award to Gena Sandberg, Human Development and Family Studies online instructor.

“The OPIE award is our opportunity to recognize a faculty member who has worked hard to engage with students, exemplifying outstanding instruction and relationship building in an online program,” said Jordan Fritts, CSU OnlinePlus interim associate provost. “As online education advances, we’re excited to recognize faculty across the University for their achievements in our online programs,” he explained.

Nominations raved of Sandberg

Students graduating from online programs this semester were provided with the opportunity to nominate a faculty member who had made the most impact on their educational experience while at CSU. Sandberg received nominations for her ability to “bridge the gap in building rapport and relationships in an online program.” Students raved about her accessibility and how she always went the extra mile. One student shared the following:

"It was very difficult to get three letters of recommendation when I was applying to graduate schools. I understand that many professors did not feel comfortable taking on that task because [as an online student] they [felt they] did not know me or my work well enough to speak on my behalf. Gena spent time and effort to put together a wonderful letter for me, which was particularly meaningful because without it, I could not have even applied. And yes, I was accepted into my first choice master’s of social work program! I'm so thankful for Gena, and believe she embodies all the wonderful attributes a professor should possess."

Colorado State University OnlinePlus congratulates and thanks Sandberg. Her contributions to CSU's online Human Development and Family Studies program help make it a valuable option for students looking to finish their bachelor’s degree online.

“Sandberg makes online learning easier to manage for her students, and putting students’ needs first is what makes an outstanding educator – one that CSU is proud to have,” Fritts said.
