Gilman Scholarship applications available

January 23, 2012

Thinking of studying abroad but unsure about how to fund it? Check out the Gilman Scholarship, which aims to create diversity among students and the programs they choose.

Creating diversity

The Gilman Scholarship program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. On average, ricipients awarded the scholarship receive roughly $4000 to study abroad. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education’s Southern Regional Center in Houston, Texas.

'Critical to success'

Applications for Fall and Summer 2012 study are due March 1, 2012, and will be available online in mid-January. Applications for the following Spring will be available mid-August and due at the beginning of October. Students receiving a federal Pell Grant from two- and four-year institutions are encouraged to apply.

Recipients of the scholarship have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages, and economies -- making them better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector.

“International education is one of the best tools for developing mutual understanding and building connections between people from different countries," said IIE President Allan Goodman. "It is critical to the success of American diplomacy and business, and the lasting ties that Americans make during their international studies are important to our country in times of conflict as well as times of peace.”
