With the sun beginning to shine more and an increase in bicyclists roaming the streets, CSUPD would like to remind students, faculty and staff of several common bike safety tips.
Last year, through efforts of the Campus Bicycle Advisory Committee, CSU's Police Department received the silver Bicycle Friendly University award from the League of American Cyclists for their support and dedication to bicycling. Since then, CSUPD has been working diligently to increase their efforts in supporting bicyclists, including the addition of a new bike fix station located outside Green Hall.
"Receiving the award was really exciting for us," said Joy Childress, CSUPD's Traffic and Bicycle Education and Enforcement Program coordinator and chair of the CBAC. "It's what propelled me to look at the universities that received the platinum award to see what they were doing differently."
Childress said Stanford University was one of the few universities that had several bike fix stations available for use, which prompted her to look into acquiring one for our campus.
Use of the station is free, and includes allen wrenches, an air pump, and an assortment of screwdrivers along with other tools to help bicyclists repair flats and complete basic tune-ups should their bike need it. The bike fix station was funded through CSUPD's bicycle budget that stems from bicycle tickets and registration fees.
In addition to the new bike station, Kris Swanson from the local bicycle shop Brave New Wheel will be volunteering Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. During this time, Swanson will be teaching bicyclists some basic repair tips that will help keep them rolling onto their destination.
Swanson's first volunteer session will be Tuesday, Jan. 31.
As a bicyclist, it is always important to adhere to these common bike safety tips:
