Talking to your kids about sexuality & safety

March 23, 2009

The Center for Family and Couple Therapy in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, College of Applied Human Sciences, again offers a Wednesday night seminar on enhancing relationships.

Relate! adult workshop

Research has shown that an open dialogue between parents and their children about sexuality strengthens parent-child relationships, promotes sexual responsibility, and helps keep younger children and teens safe.

The Center for Family and Couple Therapy (CFCT) in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, College of Applied Human Sciences, is offering a series of adult seminars and children’s workshops on enhancing relationships.

On Wednesday, March 25, from 6 to 7 p.m., speaker Jen Krafchick, Ph.D., will discuss how to talk to your kids about sexuality and safety in Gifford, room 101

Finding those teachable moments

Many parents struggle with how to talk to their kids about sex, yet research shows that an open dialogue about sexuality strengthens parent-child relationships, promotes sexual responsibility, and helps keep younger children and teens safe.

Krafchick, a certified family life educator, family therapist, and adjunct faculty member, will not only teach participants how to use developmentally appropriate strategies to share personal values but also how to be “ask-able” parents who can identify teachable moments about sexuality in everyday interactions.

Adult seminars are appropriate for adults without children and those who are parents. The cost is $10 per adult or $15 per couple. Discounts are available for adult-child combinations and multi-evening packages.

Simultaneous workshop for youth

Faculty and graduate students from the Center for Family and Couple Therapy will present Keeping myself safe, a workshop for youth, from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. in Gifford, room 132.

Children’s workshops are designed for children ages 3 ½ - 8. The cost is $20 per child and $10 for each additional sibling.

Safety on the internet / at friends' houses / in the neighborhood

This workshop will help children learn important ways to keep themselves safe on the internet, on the playground, in the neighborhood, at friends' houses, with strangers, and in many other situations. Knowing how to stay safe is a critical skill for children to learn at a young age.
