New parking coming soon

September 23, 2009

Cam is pleased to announce new places to park his hide in 2010 - construction on the parking garage on the south side of campus is ahead of schedule.

When is the parking garage between Lake Street and Prospect Road going to be finished? Is there a chance that the parking areas will be available for use prior to the shops being completed? Parking along Lake Street and as far away as Remington is full of construction vehicles as early as 6 a.m., and it makes it pretty tough for people who can't afford parking permits to find spaces to park.

Cam’s answer:

You’re in luck! (Actually, all of us are in luck.) I caught up with Mike Rush, architect at Facilities Management who’s in the thick of the project, and he tells me the parking garage is scheduled to open in January – the original opening date was fall 2010.

“We’re currently on schedule to have the parking deck ready for parking on Jan. 14, 2010, so returning students and faculty will be able to park in the new facility as they return for the spring semester,” Mike says.

Brian Chase, our fearless leader at Facilities Management, says that after the garage is open, you’ll also see a drop in construction parking as well.

It's a wrap

Work on the office wrap at the south end, adjacent to Prospect, will continue through March with scheduled occupancy by Parking Services in early April.

Mike adds that construction of the retail space on the north side adjacent to Lake Street will continue through June along with final plaza work and final landscaping.

About 834 new parking stalls on multiple levels will be added to campus. Out of 306,000 square feet, about 24,000 square feet will be occupied by street-level retail and office spaces.

And don’t forget the green: 9,000 square feet will be dedicated to a solar panel array.

Clip & Save:

- January 2010: parking decks open for parking
- March 2010: offices complete
- June 2010: retail space and any remaining work complete
