Critics want more controls to keep for-profit colleges honest

The for-profit college business has grown from a small player in education a decade ago into a force that captures more than $12 billion in annual revenues and 10 percent of the nation's college students.

The largest companies in for-profit education are publicly traded corporations that collectively earned more than $1.4 billion in profits during the last fiscal year, up 34 percent from a year earlier.

The U.S. Department of Education recently proposed regulations to govern questionable recruiting and tuition practices, rattling the industry.
