Collegian, College Avenue win record number of awards from Columbia U.

April 1, 2009

Eight first-place wins, including three for online media, were captured by Collegian and Collegian Avenue reporters, photographers and designers recently at the prestigious Columbia Scholastic Press Association, or CSPA, Gold Circle awards.

Record 28 awards

In all, a total of 28 awards were given to the Collegian and College Avenue, a record number of awards for Student Media from CSPA.

“This is one of the most prestigious college journalism contests in the country so I couldn’t be prouder of the staffs,” said Holly Wolcott, the Collegian’s news adviser.

The competition draws more than 13,000 entries annually, including material from the top journalism schools in the nation such as Ball State and Penn State.

The Gold Circle awards were announced in mid-March at the association’s annual conference in New York City. The awards started in 1984 and recognize superior college journalism.

Eight first-place wins

One of the most exciting wins was for CSU journalism student and Student Media employee Erik Myers – now on leave at Spin magazine in New York City – who won first place for his personality profile of a student delegate at the Democratic National Convention in Denver last year.

The Collegian won first place awards for online breaking news by Development Editor Aaron Hedge, online photos and audio slide show by Editor-in-Chief Aaron Montoya and the staff claimed the top online prize for online interactive news graphic for a dining map of CSU.

Collegian Design Chief Nina Beitz won first places for her information graphic portfolio and her feature package design of the Rocky Mountain Showdown. The staff won top honors for a photo layout.

Award-winning writer Maggie Canty – currently on sabbatical traveling the world but returning to CSU in the fall – won a first place award for a non-fiction column for College Avenue.
