Economy transferring students closer to home for college

A growing number of college students are realizing that attending their dream school is no longer financially sustainable.

Admissions directors at public universities around the country are reporting bumps in transfer applications, said Barmak Nassirian, a spokesman for the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

Reported percentage increases in transfer applications from in-state students for next fall:

  • Indiana University - 23% increase 
  • University of North Carolina - 15.3% increase
  • University of California system - 11% increase
