Recent Interior Design graduate garners top award

October 6, 2011

Chelsea Lawrence, a 2011 interior design graduate of the Department of Design and Merchandising, was recently notified that she was the winner of the 2011 Legacy Scholarship for Undergraduates.

'An exceptional designer'

While a senior majoring in interior design at Colorado State University, Lawrence entered the national competition that selects the top interior design portfolio in the nation. This competition is sponsored by the American Society of Interior Design Foundation.

The Legacy Scholarship is open to all students in their junior or senior year of undergraduate study and enrolled in at least a three year program of interior design. The competition is designed to encourage students to seriously plan their portfolios. The prize included a cash award of $4,000.

“We are so pleased for, and proud of, Chelsea Lawrence! She is an exceptional designer and her work clearly exhibits her sophisticated and versatile design skills. The interior design faculty is thrilled for her,” says Stephanie Clemons, professor and academic advisor in the interior design program.

Showcasing 'Best of Work'

The award was given based on an interior design portfolio submission that demonstrated "Best of Work" design components. Lawrence submitted 12 components from her portfolio including design skills from all four years at CSU. A successful variety of conceptual, technical, planning, and rendered design components rounded out her submission. Judges evaluated academic accomplishments, presentation skills, design and planning competency, and conceptual creativity.

“I feel fortunate to have been recognized with the ASID Foundation Legacy Scholarship for the work I so passionately pour myself into,” said Lawrence. “I couldn’t have asked for a better conclusion to my undergraduate studies at CSU. This scholarship has further fuelled my drive while laying a foundation for continued growth and experience as I transition into the professional field of design.”

Lawrence recently moved to Orange County, Calif. for a design position with SCI Design Group.
